If your plans are taking you to Europe in 2024 and beyond, you will most likely need to apply for the new ETIAS visa-waiver.
Starting from 2024, visitors from 60 visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, will be required to have a travel authorization to enter many European countries, including all EU members.
The authorization, known as ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), aims to strengthen border security and digitally screen and track travelers entering and leaving EU countries. Despite misconceptions, ETIAS is not a visa, and would more accurately be described as a visa-waiver. The ETIAS, like the ESTA, is a travel authorization for travellers not requiring a visa to visit Europe
The ETIAS will be mandatory for short-term stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
You will be turned away at the border if you do not have ETIAS approval to visit member countries. It is entirely possible a grace period will be granted when the system launches to allow member countries to work out their systems but that has not been discussed or confirmed.
As of right now the program is scheduled to launch in 2024, however no specific date for implementation has been released. To apply, travelers can use either the official ETIAS website or the mobile application. Stay informed and be prepared for these important changes to European travel regulations.
